Class details

Have you stored lengths of fabric for years wondering if you’ll ever use them? Come to Open Southall and learn how to turn them into a traditional Indian suit. Over the course of 4 weeks you will turn your suit lengths into a unique and bespoke kameez shalwar.

Saturdays

1 – 3pm

Course Fee : £40

Pay As You Go : £15 per session

Laura has 40 years of sewing experience, and 25 of traditional cutting methods. She will help you design and make a traditional Indian suit; whether your sewing skills are just a little rusty, or if you are a complete beginner. Each stage and two hour session is carefully thought through so you finish the 4 week course with a suit that you are pleased to wear.

Don’t worry if you are new to sewing; Laura will do a short sewing machine tutorial to put you at your ease and guide you through the process.

About the Tutor

After studying an academic degree and pursuing a career in business, Laura changed course. She went to London College of Fashion to study making costumes for performance.

Her work experience in the ladies’ workroom at the National Theatre led to call backs to help with productions. She worked there for over two years and went freelance in 1994.

“I have made costumes for most major theatres in London and some for TV and film plus replicas for Museums. When theatres went dark during the pandemic I decided rather than relaunch in theatre to focus on education so I can pass on the skills I have built up over the last 30 years.”

Laura is also skilled in related subjects like dyeing, dye effects, screen printing and millinery. And can knit and crochet.
